Description: One of a set of four side chairs with shield backs, inlaid decoration, and upholstered seats. Shield-back or vase-back (the period term) designs appeared both in Hepplewhite's "Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide" first published in 1788, and Sheraton's "The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book" published in four volumns (1791–1794); these designs were immediately picked up in America where they were made in most major cabinetmaking centers. The chair back has three splats, the center with a inlaid oval paterae flanked by two bowed splats with urn shapes, and a inlaid fan at the pointed end. The trapezoidal seat has a serpentine front and over-the rail upholstery. There are two plain, straight, tapered front legs, four plain stretchers, and two plain, flared back legs.
