Description:
English pearlware large circular wash bowl (see matching pitcher, 2004.14.2) with an out-turned rim and the base curving under, and an applied footrim. The bowl is transfer printed in blue with a scene with the ruins of a castle with a boy chasing two cows through an arch, and to the right is a plinth with urn on top and a fountain (the pattern name is currently not known). The rim of the bowl is printed with a leaf design with large roses and a fantastic bird; the sides of the bowl are printed with three scenes - the two large scenes depict a smaller version of the boy, castle ruins, and cows, and the smaller scene has the fountain and a boy fishing. This unknown printed pattern also occurs on the lid of a toilet box, see Coysh and Henrywood, The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery, 1780-1880, Volume 1, p. 252.
