Description:
English pearlware pitcher (see matching basin, 2004.14.2) with broad spout, attached high looping handle with molded trefoil terminal, and narrowed circular base. The pitcher is transfer printed in blue with a scene of the ruins of a castle with a boy chasing cows through an arch, a tall plinth with urn on top, a fountain, trees and flying birds (the pattern name is currently not known). The handle is decorated with a printed moss design, and the spout has large roses. This unknown printed pattern also occurs on the lid of a toilet box, see Coysh and Henrywood, The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery, 1780-1880, Volume 1, p. 252.
