Description: Hand-colored map of China drawn and engraved by John C. Russell, and published in "Ostell's New General Atlas" in 1813. John C. worked with his father, John Russell Sr., under the firm name of Russell and Sons, where they also produced maps for their "General Atlas of Modern Geography, composed from the latest & best authorities, by J. C. Russell, geographer" published by Baldwin and Cradock, Burney's "Voyage" in 1813, and for the American geographer, William Guthrie's (1708-1770), "The Atlas to Guthrie's System of Geography", published in London in 1795. The map shows the provinces, principle cities, towns and harbors, and rivers. It also shows the off-shore islands of Hainan and Formosa, the Gulf of Tungquin in the south, Gulf of Petchelee in the north, and other designations such as "Mongols" and "Kluts of Kokonor" along the northern borders. The provinces and other boundaries are outlined in green, yellow, and pink; the number "21" in black is in the upper right corner; "CHINA." is in an oval in the lower right corner; "Longitude East from London" is in the lower right longitude scale; and "J.C. Russell Junior execudit" is on the lower left corner. The back has three pencil marks: the number "21", and two ovals similar to the one on the front with "China" - one blank and one with "AFRICA".
