Description: Man's waistcoat with shawl collar done in polychrome brocaded silk with brown glazed cotton twill backing; tan glazed cotton twill lining; batting; 8 shank metallic buttons; leather facing at the bottom inside front; three welt pockets; and a steel buckle. Waistcoats were one means by which men could add color to their wardrobes during the 19th century. This example, made from an imported brocaded silk, is padded with batting for added warmth. The batting serves a secondary (yet equally important) purpose of filling out the chest, providing the rounded shape demanded by fashion at that time. The garment appears to be hand stitched.
