Description:
Print titled "CHERRY VALLEY FEMALE ACADEMY." and "C. G. HAZELTINE. / J. A. FOWLER. / ASSOCIATE PRINCIPALS," which is part of the scrapbook (HD 2002.1) started by Caroline (c.1800-1831) and Maria Moseley (1803-1861). One of the assemblers of the scrapbook, Caroline or Maria, wrote "My room" under and circled in brown ink the window on the upper right corner of the left wing of the Academy building. This steel engraving of the Cherry Valley Female Academy in Cherry Valley, Otsego County, NY, which was a well-known and highly-regarded girls' finishing school that specialized in music and the arts, is "from a New York history published in 1860." The main Academy building was completed in 1796, two stories high, 30 ft. wide and 60 ft. long; the two three-story wings were added in 1805. The Academy operated through 1866 when it was forced to close because of economic problems.
