Description: Fragment of crewel embroidery, supposedly a fragment of a petticoat border from the 18th century. A handwritten note on the back of the piece read "Section of 18thc petticoat border from/ old Hadley MA family./ crewel embroidery on linen./ Linsey-woolsey backing." (see also HD 2000.18.7). The crewel embroidery is a meandering floral vine in polychrome woolen yarns. Stitches include couching stitch and a stem stitch. The embroidery is done onto a bleached or half bleached plain weave linen ground. The piece is mounted onto a quilted piece of green wool that is backed with a piece of linen and wool batting.
