Description:
Piece of needle lace made in the style of the old Point plat de Venise, late 19th century, where the nuns and their pupils made lace characterised by examples such as these. Youghal lace is characterised by bold floral arrangements shaded by the proximity of stitches, and spiky leaves and linking bars arranged in hexagonal shapes. This type of lace was begun in 1846, in part to serve as another occupation for people affected by the potato famine. In 1896, Princess Maude of Wales ordered a Youghal fan for her marriage.
