Description: English pearlware "Pholas Eastatus" dessert dish with a coral-colored shell end and gilt edge, which has an impressed "WEDGWOOD" and "S" on the base. According to Robin Reilly, these Wedgwood shell designs reflected Josiah Wedgwood's (1730-1795) special interest in shell, of which he had made a serious study since 1778. Although the Shape Design Book (1802 watermark) illustrated shell forms with their scientific names, the factory name for these forms was "Wreathed Shell Dessert" (the term 'wreathed' presumably referring to the ribbing in the design that occurs on most of the pieces). These componenet forms, often more naturalistically modelled than than earlier creamware pieces, were offered by the factory "with coloured washes or 'richly gilt'," and were produced thoughout the 19th century in the variously popluar bodies of pearlware, whiteware, caneware, lustreware, and majolica.
