Description:
Blue and white Jacquard coverlet of natural linen (warp and weft) and supplementary wefts of blue wool, handwoven with a summer/winter weave with a repeat design including a rose, eagle, willow tree, mariner's compass, stars, flowers, and a smaller bird.. The design elements (eagle, weeping willow) are similar to examples in "Labors of Love" book, page 96 (bottom 1836) and p. 91 (although in latter example, eagles only in four corners and wings are up). The border has an abstract design, also a repeat, on all four sides. On one side in warp direction is a true fringe that is 3 1/2" long; the other warp direction side is hemmed. The two sides in the weft direction are the selvage. The seam down the middle, with the two halves matched up very well. The coverlet has a North Charlestown, New Hampshire, provenance.
