Description:
Needlework sampler made by Maria Amalia Espiner Imoyaen (b. ca1720), which was given to Margaret Whiting (1860-1946), one of the founders of the Blue and White Society, in 1907. The text translation is: "Lo Mizo Maria Amalia Espiner Imoyaen of the House of Lady Mary of [S]pain...Prays [17]32 / in the name of the Son of Mary ...a e I / Oh Son of Mary Remember a e I, nd Pray for Me." This is the only example of Spanish school-girl embroidery in the collection. Maria was probably a student in a convent school where daily needlework was part of the curriculum. It is stylistically related to a wide variety of samplers and needlework that was produced in Spain and throughout the Spanish colonies. The geometric, hexagonal, band-patterned designs are a direct reference to textiles and carpets connected to the Spanish royal family. Surviving examples from the 12th and 13th centuries are preserved in the royal tombs at the Monasterio de Las Huelgas in Burgos, Spain.
