Description: Bernard Romans, a British officer turned American patriot, published the first printed view of the battle of Bunker Hill. English publishers soon began to issue their own prints to satisfy the public’s appetite for information. Edward Barnard’s New Comprehensive and Complete History of England (London, 1783) contained this view of the battle. Hand-colored engraving inscribed, "Engraved for Barnard's New Complete Authentic History of England. View of the Attack on Bunker Hill, with the Burning of Charlestown, June 17, 1775." and "Drown by Mr. Miller" and "Engraved by Lodge." The battle actually took place on Breed's Hill on the Charlestown peninsula where the British garrison attacked the patriot-defended Breed's Hill; the British won but at a cost of 1054 killed and wounded out of 2200 troops. The scene shows four British ships embarking troops to the shore and British canons bombing Charlestown which is in flames; "Boston" is inscribed above the left shore, and "Charlestown" above the left.
