Description:
Man's sleeveless waistcoat made from a bright orange-red, silk faille (now faded), embroidered in polychrome chain stitch in motifs of small flowers and floral garlands along edge. Matching embroidery of small floral sprigs covers the center front buttons. Origianlly made in the 1770s, this waistcoat was altered or updated for wear in the 1790s, as fashions changed and men's waistcoats grew increasingly shorter. the more expensive fabric was not waisted in back (where it would be covered by the coat), so a cheaper, more utilitarian cotton flannel was used.
