Description: Curtain from a set of bed hangings made of white copperplate-printed cotton in sepia on white with humorous/satirical caricatures of British soldiers in an encampment, which is inscribed "ROYAL / ARTILLERY / G.III / R" in a drum on the upper right. George III of England (1738-1820) reigned from 1760 until his death in 1820.
Label Text: By the end of the 18th century, choices in textiles proliferated with improved technology and expanded trade. The British perfected printed textiles to give the effect of painted figures. Within a few years, roller printing enhanced the speed of manufacture and choices in design. Later toiles have busier figures and smaller repeats. The one satirizing George the Third was used in nearby Sunderland, Massachusetts.
