Description: English blackware or black-glazed (also known as "Jackfield-type" ware) jug covered with a highly reflective, blackish-brown lead glaze. The jug is decorated with gilt decoration along the top rim and belly; gilt band and scrolling foliate pattern on upper rim; and a scrolled rococo cartouche on belly with the block capital letters "PUNCH". The form of the jug is both a rare example of a jug expressly used for serving punch and of a blackware form (almost all surviving blackwares in collections are in the form of tea or coffee wares) or black-glazed earthenware. Most punch would have been consumed from a punch bowl, either drunk directly or ladled into a glass, but also could be served from jugs. The large, baluster-shaped jug has a U-shaped spout, swelling base, turned footrim, and attached flat strap handle; the underside of the base is slightly rough.
