Description: Child's dress made of powder blue silk with a white, needlerun lace band around the short, circular neckline, which was made (machine stitched) by Susan Melissa Burgess Dexter (1852-1940) for her older daughter, Mattie Ethel Dexter (b.1878), to wear to a wedding. The short- style dress, which probably extended to the knee, has very short, capped sleeves with white lace band on insides of each sleeve; three box pleats in front extending down to the low waist which is formed by shirring across front; a bow on either side of waist, each with a pleated sash extending to back waist center and a sash ends tie around each other once and sewn in place, with the ends hanging freely. The bodice closes in back with 14 mother-of-pearl buttons extending from top of dress down to the sashed waist. The 2" hem of dress has box pleating except for center front.
