Description:
Needlework sampler done in silk embroidery on a plain linen ground, which has the inscription, "Sophia Bodurtha Aged 12 years in September." There is a label on the reverse: "My grandmother Sophia Bodurtha was born Sept. 26th 1818. This was made when she was 12 years old or 1818+12 in 1830 / 1946-1860+ 116 years old / Cora M. Barnes." Sophia Bodurtha (1818-1886) was one of four children of Alden Bodurtha (1786-1864) who married Sophia Russell (1793-1858) in 1817. Sophia married Jeremiah Barnes, and they had three children, two of whom survived to adulthood. The sampler has nine rows of the alphabet in cursive, capital, and lower case and the numbers 1-8 with one line completed with two symbols and one with the line finished with trees and symbols; over the verse, "Religion what / treasures untold / resides in that / heavenly word / More precious than / silver and gold / or all this earth / can afford" in two groups of three lines separated by a stylized pine tree; over three houses with hip roofs (the left house has an addition), two with 2 rows of windows and one with 3 rows of windows, a striped pole between the center and right house, and a tree at the far right. The three-sided border of zig-zag rows of cross stitch running up both sides and across the top are interspersed with trees.
