Description:
German or Dutch delft dish decorated in purple and yellow, which was purchased at an antiques shop on High St. in Greenfield, Massachusetts, from the woman who ran the shop who was a member of the Roberts family of Gill, Massachusetts. This dish has a history of ownership in Gill. The shallow dish has a wide rim painted with a purple ermine border (meandering line and dash on either side) The well is decorated with the figure of a farmer outlined in purple with a hat and yellow pants, and carrying a yellow sack over his back and holding a cane. The figure is walking on a yellow ground and is flanked by purple sponged trees. The reverse of the dish is glazed with a clear, lead glaze, and the footrim is pierced with a hole for hanging.
