Description:
Engine-turned small red earthenware teapot with lid, pouring spout and handle, and a flat bottom. The cyndrical, drum-shaped teapot has a slightly domed lid with ribbed round finial and an attached handle molded with a basket weave pattern and foliate thumbpiece. The body, lid, and base of spout are decorated with engine turning; the body is decorated with a chevron pattern from the lip to the base rim. Similar fragments in lead glazed red earthenware have been excavated from the Nims House site, Deerfield, MA in 1988. The fragments included a spout, body, and handle fragment. In April 1771 the Pennsylvania Packet printed a notice for the sale of "Red Engine Lath China." China and glass merchant Frederick Rhinelander of New York City ordered glazed and unglazed red china in 1778.
