Description: German porcelain teacup produced as a souvenir piece, which may have found use in the many tea houses that catered to Deerfield's tourist trade in the early 20th century. One side of the cup has a black transfer print image of a three-story building behind a large tree and a fence (Old Indian House), printed under image is the inscription, "DEERFIELD, MASS., OLD INDIAN HOUSE BUILT 1686." This image of the Old Indian House was probably taken from the frontispiece of George Sheldon's "History of Deerfield", Vol. II. The base is printed in black ink with the inscription, "MADE IN GERMANY FOR/ J. H. BRIGGS,/ DEERFIELD, MASS." James H. Briggs operated the Pocumtuck Hotel, later called the Deerfield Inn, between 1908 and 1914. The white, circular teacup has a tapered base and attached handle, with gilt decoration on the rim and six gilt dashes on either side of the handle.
