Description:
Book titled "Romeo and Juliet," one of a set of seven volumes of plays by William Shakespeare with a red cloth binding with gold embossed lettering, which was owned by Gertrude G. Porter Ashley (1858-1936), the wife of Charles Hart Ashley (1860-1925). In 1895, Charles Hart Ashley inherited the Ashely house and lot in Deerfield from his uncle, Jonathan Ashely (1816-1895). The Ashley family continued to won the property until 1944 when Jonathan Porter Ashley (1890-1948), the son of Charles and Gertrude, was unable to maintain the farm, and the property passed to first Frank Boyden (1879-1972) of Deerfield Academy and then Henry N. Flynt (1893-1970), founder of Historic Deerfield.
