Description:
Appliqued, cotton quilt in a variation of the Whig Rose or Democratic Rose pattern (which is a variation of the Rose of Sharon pattern) laid out in side-by-side blocks on point with appliqued, scrolling branches of roses in green red, and yellow on a white ground, and a four-sided border of an appliqued, red, plain weave, cotton swag with tassels; three-piece, plain weave, off-white, cotton backing; and cotton batting. The quilting is done in echo, grid, leaf and vines designs, at 7 quilting stitches per inch. This pattern was popular from about 1840-1900. According to the donor, the quilt was made by her paternal grandmother.
