Description:
Evening dress consisting of a bodice and matching skirt made of black silk and matching machine- made [?] net, with sequins, which was said to be worn by Alice Cary Weeks Bridges on the occasion of her 10th wedding anniversary. She married George Bridges on September 9, 1896, possibly in Northfield, Massachusetts, and the dress was a gift to the museum from their daughter, Elizabeth Burgess Leyden, in 1988. The dress consists of a black taffeta foundation overlayed with matching net completely embroidered with sequins or pailletes and jet beads. Bodice closes center front. Skirt has a small train. The dress has been altered, reflecting a date that supports the ca. 1906 anniversary (and possibly an update to a dress worn around the time of her 1896 marriage). The bodica has been shortened; the original petersham or waistband inside the bodice mostly removed. The bodice fastens across the proper left shoulder, and then down around the proper left armscye to the side seam.
