Description: Lathe consists of a walnut bed and cast iron headstock, tailstock and tool rest. Walnut bed consists of two parallel wooden planks placed on edge with a space between them; these are bolted to three uprights that support the bed; the headstock is bolted to a clamp that secures it to the bed, it make be moved to align it with the large flywheel underneath; the two cast iron uprights support the driveshaft of the lathe, the shaft is of iron or steel and has a wooden pulley wheel attached to it, it is held in place by a pin bearing on the outboard side and a babbit metal gudgeon on the inboard side, the faceplate and bit are attached to the shaft on the inboard side, the tailstock contains a pointed spur on the end of a shaft that may be advanced or retracted in the tailstock chassis by means of a screw, the tailstock is held onto the bed by a clamp and metal screw that passes through the space running the length of the bed, this permits the tailstock to move back and forth on the bed, the tool rest clamps to the bed much the same wat as the tailrest, it consists of a socket and a "T" shaped rest, the rest may be moved vertically by loosening a setscrew, the undercarriage consists of a treadle that is connected by a pitman to a small eccentric wheel, at the opposite end of the shaft is a gear that connects to a small gear on the flywheel shaft, the flywheel is a large iron wheel with four spokes that is attached to the two wooden uprights beneath the headstock end of the bed, a leather belt transfers the power from the flywheel to the pulley wheel on the headstock, cast iron parts are roghly cast and painted green (probably new paint),
