Description:
Unfinished needlework sampler done in silk embroidery on unbleached, plain-woven linen, which is inscribed "Jane Allis / Deerfield 1830, aged 12 years." Jane Allis (1818-1858) was the daughter of John Belding Allis (c.1773-1861) and Lucy De Wolf Allis (1775-1849) of Deerfield, who married James W. Sprague (1821-1891) of Buckland in 1847. The sampler has four rows of the alphabet; over the saying "Industry and perserverance secure the attention & respect of wise person;" over a two-story brownish house with two chimneys, nine windows on the front and and a center door, and five windows on the end, surrounded by pine and fruit trees, two white birds, a dog, flower basket and flowers along the bottom. There are traces of what was to be a three-sided scrolling border.
