Description:
Pewter teapot made by Samuel Danforth (1774-1816) of Hartford, Connecticut, where he worked from December, 1795, until his death in 1816 producing his eagle-marked wares. Samuel was the youngest son of Thomas Jr. (1731-1782) of Middletown, Conn., who began the metalworking dynasty that put Danforth pewter on thousands of American tables. Samuel was a very successful pewterer, whose estate was valued at over $11,000 net when he died; however, the quality of his output was uneven. Pewter teapots, such as this example apparently used in conjunction with ceramics, were a popular choice in middle-class households.
