Description:
Pieced, red and white, cotton quilt in a variation of the Sawtooth pattern with pieced triangles laid out in lattice strips with the white blocks inscribed with 266 names; three piece, plain weave, white cotton backing; and cotton batting. There are also 16 people named "In Memoriam" (see data file for the complete list). Many of the names are from families from Watertown, Weston, and Groton, Massachusetts, and Francistown, New Hampshire. The fashion for friendship quilts emerged in the 1840s out of the earlier custom of keeping verses and the signature of friends in bound albums. They were often gifts for loved ones departing for new homes in the west, or as commemorations of special events such as birth or marriage.
