Description: Woman's bonnet with silk ribbon and artificial flowers made of cotton and silk. The plait is natural straw (4 stranded braids), some all strands light (A), majority 1 dark strand and 3 light (B). Rows of plait are sewn with long stiches of white thread (visible on the inside of the bonnet) in the following pattern beginning at the brim edge: 3B 1A 1B 1A * 5B 1A 1B (repeat from *).The crown is at approximately 110 degree angle from the brim. The crown is flat in the back, measures 5" across, widens to 6" at point of attachment to the brim. Straw bavolet is 2.63" at center back. Crown is 8" deep. Outside trimming: 4.25" cream and pink silk ribbon (plain edge, patterned with vertical lines and diamonds). One ribbon stretches over crown/brim intersection and is tacked between brim edge and bavolet. Unlined. Inside trimming: 10 white and light pink roses/gardenias of 3 different types sewn to brim so that they frame the face. (Type A: pink velvet outer petals and fine pink silk inner petals. Green details painted on both. Look something like tulip tress flowers. Type B: Fine cotton roses or gardenias with yellow (thread and paint) stamens in center. Type b is smaller version. Type C: Coarser white cotton with yellow chenile centers. Arrangement of flowers from bonnet right: A A B B C B C C b b. 2 types of ribbon ties: black velvet 17.25x.63", and same silk as outside 17.5" (right) and 14.5" (left). 2 pink silk violets are sewn over a hole in the shorter ribbon. The ribbon currently on the bonnet is probably not original, added ca 1900.
