Description:
Plain, white linen towel with the initials "M W". There are two handwritten notes in the file: "This towel was among Aunt Mary Allen's things, & the enclosed slip of paper was pinned to it. It is in Aunt Mary's hand writing - maybe you would like to have the towel in the "Lamb house", or else where. I marvel at the hours that must have been spent on just one item like this. Feb. 24, 1958. Margaret Carlos Allen, Deerfield, Mass." And, "Hand spun & woven linen towel - marked M. W - by Mary ann (Stebbins) Wright. (Mrs. Luke Wright - lived in Lamb house)". Mary Ann Stebbins (1804-1887), daughter of Asa Stebbins (1767-1844), married Luke Wright (1801-1878) in 1832. Asa Stebbins built his brick house on Lot 33 in 1799, which remained in the Stebbins family until 1889. It descended, in trust, from Asa to his son Roland (1794-1848), with the provision that Roland's sister, Polly (1794-1848) have the use of the northwest room and chamber above it during her lifetime. In 1851, the heirs of Asa Stebbins granted his daughter, Mary Ann, a life lease. In 1889, the surviving Stebbins heirs sold both lots 33 and 34 to Estella M. Lamb (1857-1932), wife of Joseph E. Lamb (1857-1915) of Greenfield.
