Description:
Pieced, glazed worsted wool quilt with a diamond medallion center surrounded by large diamond and triangular shapes in cream and light brown plain weave wool (tammy), and blue, red, and green twill weave wool (shalloon) creating a checkered-like center (sometimes called a Harlequin pattern) and stitched overall in worsted thread with stylized floral patterns similar to those seen on glazed wool, wholecloth quilts. This example has two shaped corners at the lower end. Either linen or worsted thread was used for quilting, in two colors. These early pieced wool quilts represent a transition between the wholecloth and patchwork quilts. The American Museum in Bath, England, has an almost identical quilt.
