Description:
White linen towel or napkin woven a variation of a twill weave, sometimes known as overshot. Unusually, this selvage-width textile for use in dining and/or food preparation is hemmed along the long sides, rather than the shorter sides, making it wider than longer. An inscription written in black (probably iron gall) ink reveals "M.A. Wright." The towel was donated by Polly Stebbins Telford who was a direct descendent of Asa Stebbins (1767-1844) of Deerfield and Emilia Harvey (1769-1841), daughter of Simeon Harvey of Deerfield, through their daughter Emilia (b.1798) who married Abel Houghton of St. Albans, Vermont, in 1817.
