Description:
Purchased cotton sheet hemmed by hand and marked in ink "No. 1 1860" by Jane Ashley Bates of Westfield, Mass., the grandmother of the donor. Their family is descended from David Ashley (1642-1718), son of Robert Ashley (d.1682) who was one of the founders of Springfield; David Ashley was the grandfather of Jonathan Ashley (1712-1780) of Deerfield. On Nov. 27, 1860, Jane Ashley Bates married James Carruthers Greenough of Westfield, the older brother of Deacon John Johnstone Greenough who was a life-long resident of Deerfield, Mass.
