Description: Large, rectangular drawstring bag decorated with crewel embroidery primarily in pinks, greens and beiges, which is dated 1731 and has the initials "M W" (both in cross stitch). This bag is similar to one dated 1705 and initialed "MB" in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and one in the New York Historical Society dated 1708, which are examples of the English embroidery tradition transplanted to New England with little alteration. The crewelwork decoration includes a flower pot in the bottom center, a large partridge-like bird in the center of the bag, and the rest of the surface covered with scrolling floral sprays. The drawstring ends in tassels. This crewel embroidery design was adapted by Greeff Fabrics for their Historic Deerfield line (probably in the 1980s), Series #61210-08, "Birds and Berries", 56", screen print, 100% cotton, Vat colors, approximate repeat 28 1/2, Made in England."
