Description:
Pair of woman's boots made of off-white satin weave cotton, cotton insoles, and brown leather soles. Until the 20th century, women’s shoes were not uniformly made differentiating the right and left foot. This pair of “straights” is completely flat, and like many shoes of the period, its construction does not protect the upper portion from mud or water. The use of a light color, as well as the condition in which they have survived, suggests that they were worn only a few times for evening or indoor occasions.

Subjects:
Textile fabrics; Cotton; Leather
