Description: Infant's cap or bonnet made from a brocaded silk fabric and embellished with metallic braid, known in the 18th-century as lace. Inside, the cap is lined in a white linen, and the cap is edged all around in a white grosgrain silk binding. Written in ink on the inside is "Strasbourg"; the writing appears to be consistent with the age of the cap, and may suggest a French or Alsatian provenance. 18th-century childrens' clothing frequently mirrored those worn by adults. While some modifications were made, styles, fabrics, and trimming were often the same on both kinds of garments, as this example shows. The patterned silk was probably recycled from an earlier, adult garment. The metallic lace, while expensive compared to other kinds of trim in the period, would have elevated this cap to a more luxurious level.
