Description:
Fragments of drawloom-woven silk brocade assembled to make a chalice cover or table mat. The almost square cover or mat is significantly pieced. Much of the background patterning (the white "flushing" effect) has been worn away. Metallic silver trim edges all four sides, and two separate lengths have been basted to the center front to make a cross motif. The piece is backed with a glazed cotton. Once they were no longer fashionable, expensive textiles like this drawloom-woven silk were often reused, repurposed, and cut down into other forms. They were also sometimes given to the Church. This fabric may have first been a furnishing or dress textile when it was newly woven. See also HD F.215.
