Description: Cream-white handkerchief with blue lines forming checks, and a wider blue border on all four sides. Onto the handkerchief is a paper notem on which in ink and pencil is written "J. Addison Miriam's handkerchief, made from flax raised by my Father, and put into the loom by my Mother to make a handkerchief for each of her children in 1822 but she died before finishing the web, and finished by my sister Almira. Mother died Dec. 24, 1822, Greenfield Mass." The handkerchief is a single selvage width. The handkerchief is an important example of an early 19th-century clothing accessory woven in Franklin County that gives insight into weaving capabilities and patterns at this time.
