Description:
Back drop made into spread - Tree of Life - with alphabet - also with initials "S. W." (Miss Townsend thinks - 2nd quarter 18th century. New England. Queen Anne - Tree of Life pattern. Embroidered in crewel on homespun New England linen. This undoubtedly belongs to the same set as the backdrop in the possession of Mr. H. F. Dupont of of Wilmington, Delaware, which is illustrated on page one in the book by Joseph Downs "American Furniture - Queen Anne and Chippendale Periods," this plate is a well forward of the text in the Illustrators from the Winterthur Collection.
This is the only known existing coverlet with the name and alphabet, therefore unique and exceptionally rare.
