Description:
Crewel embroidered coverlet worked on hand-woven dimity with a floral sprays, peacocks and elaborate border with scrolling floral sprays with blue birds, which came with a hand-written note: "Counterpane wrought by / Abbiah Thomas daughter / of Capt James of Duxbury / wife of Capt Wm Thomas / of Marshfield about 1740." Abiah Thomas (1720-1799) was the daughter of Capt. James Thomas (1696-1750) and Deborah Sherman Thomas (1689-1774) of Duxbury who married in 1715. In 1754, Abiah became the second wife of her second cousin (paternal grandfathers were brothers), Capt. William Thomas 1727-1798) of Marshfield, Massachusetts, and had five children.
