Description:
Coverlet or wall hanging embroidered with wool and copper alloy threads on a linen ground with a variety of figures, animals, structures, and foliage including a Helios-Apollo design, Flora, soldiers, friars, working people, water or wine vendors, "gardens of love," Moorish arches and fountains, etc. More research needs to be done on this piece, which may have been made in colonial Mexico or South America in the late 18th century, in imitation of European examples. Three 24.5" widths of twill-weave linen are stitched together to form this textile.
