Description: Coverlet made from copperplate printed cotton depicting "L'Homage de l'America a la France" (America pays homage to France). The scenes include an Indian woman followed by other figures, one carrying the American flag with thirteen stars, and another a cap of liberty to thank France, seated and crowned, for the expeditionary forces of the Marquis de La Fayette (1757-1834) or Lafayette and Comte de Rochambeau (1725-1807), which helped the American colonial insurgents to gain their independence. Those forces had set out from the harbor of La Rochelle, whose towers also form part of the pattern. The pattern was designed by Jean-Baptiste Huet (1745-1811) and produced in Jouy. In later prints from Huet's plate, the figure of France appears uncrowned. See valence and bed curtain (HD 2003.18) done in the "L'Homage" pattern and the HD reproduction bed furnishings.
