Embroidered coverlet comprised of three strips of twill-woven wool decorated with brightly colored, homespun and dyed wool, embroidered floral sprays on a black background, which is attributed to Lucretia Hall (1773-1851), the wife of Joel Hall (1771-1850) of Charlemont who married in 1793 in Wallingford, Connecticut. Embroidered blankets were popular in western Massachusetts. Such bed furnishings, prominent in the household, remained a means of conveying assets and an air of refinement well into the 19th century. According to family tradition, this example was one of several made by Lucretia Hall (1773-1851) for her family members. The Halls raised sheep in East Charlemont, and Lucretia spun, dyed and wove the wool using her own designs for the coverlets. This coverlet was presented to her granddaughter, Mary Pratt (1830-1912), the daughter of Catherine Hall Prattl (1808-1890) who married Josiah Pratt (1802-1887) in 1828.
