Description:
Needlework sampler done in silk embroidery in two shades of green and shades of pink and cream in cross stitch on a coarse linen background, which is unfished. This sampler may have been made by Sarah Bryant Fay (1855-1836), the daughter of Sarah Smith Bryant (1812-1887) who made the sampler, HD 95.020.1. Sarah Smith Bryant was the daughter of John Bryant (1780-1865), who became a Boston merchant in the firm of Bryant and Sturgis, and Mary Cleveland Smith (1784-1860). John Bryant's father, John Bryant Sr. (1743-1816) married Hannah Mason (1757-1829), the daughter of Col. David Mason (1726-1794) and Hannah Symmes Mason (d.1788), in 1779 in West Springfield, Massachusetts, where they are both buried. John Bryant Sr. (see HD 95.020.4 for a photograph of his portrait) succeeded his father-in-law as Deputy Commissary of Military Stores at the Springfield Armory. Also see the Massachusetts Historical Society for the Bryant-Mason-Smith Family Papers, 1767-1861. Sarah Smith Bryant married Joseph Story Fay (1812-1897) in 1840, lived in Boston and later Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and had two surviving sons and a daughter, Sarah Bryant Fey. The sampler has 3 1/2 rows of alphabet and the numbers 1-8. The sampler has a 1/4" hem on top and bottom; selvedge on sides; a single row of cross stitch 1/2" from edge (varies on top and sides); and one dark brown letter in top hem. This sampler has never been finished or framed and is soiled, and has one length of pink silk hanging from the last letter.
