Description:
Needlework sampler done in silk embroidery in medium brown on a coarse linen background with five rows of alphabet, the numbers 1-16, and rows of dividing cross stitch and one half row of green cross stich below second line, over "Sarah Smith Bryant." Sarah Smith Bryant (1812-1887) was the daughter of John Bryant (1780-1865), who became a Boston merchant in the firm of Bryant and Sturgis, and Mary Cleveland Smith (1784-1860). John Bryant's father, John Bryant Sr. (1743-1816) married Hannah Mason (1757-1829), the daughter of Col. David Mason (1726-1794) and Hannah Symmes Mason (d.1788), in 1779 in West Springfield, Massachusetts, where they are both buried. John Bryant Sr. (see HD 95.020.4 for a photograph of his portrait) succeeded his father-in-law as Deputy Commissary of Military Stores at the Springfield Armory. Also see the Massachusetts Historical Society for the Bryant-Mason-Smith Family Papers, 1767-1861. Sarah Smith Bryant married Joseph Story Fay (1812-1897) in 1840, lived in Boston and later Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and had two surviving sons and a daughter, Sarah Bryant Fey (1855-1936) by whom the unfinished sampler, HD 95.020.2, may have been made. The sampler has a 1/4" hem on all sides with an outline row of cross stitch. The sampler has never been framed and is soiled.
