Description: Family register of the Wells family done in silk embroidery in cross stitch in brown (originally black) on a plain linen ground. The text reads: "Henry Wells son of Obadih and Mary Wells / was born in Connecticut Farms New Jersey 1742. / Hannah Stout daughter of John & Elizabeth Stout / was born at New York 1747. & they was married / in May 1764. the following is a list of their Children / Henry born March 20th 1765 John born Nov. 12th 1766 / Obadiah born July 23d 1768 Hannah born May 3d 1770 / Cornelius born Sept.9th 1772 Richard born June 24th 1774 / Elizabeth Sibly born July 14th 1776 & died August 1st / aged 17 days. Phebe born Oct 28th 1777 Benjamin / Stout born Sept. 10th 1780 Katey born July 1st 1782 / Abigail born August 18th 1784 Mary Hamutal born April 28th 1788 / William born Nov 13th 1789" and is signed "done by Mary H Wells. Montague March 28th 1806." Between the text and signature, there is a row of four pine trees alternating with a basket of fruit and two floral sprays, over a split row of flowers. Dr. Henry Wells (1742-1814), the son of Obadiah Wells and Mary Conkling Wells, and Hannah Stout Wells (1747-1813), the daughter of John Stout and Elizabeth Sibley Stout, married in 1764 and had 13 children. Mary H. Wells (1788-1876) was their 12th child who married Daniel Rowe (1882-1863); see the data file for the line of descent to the donor. The frame has been removed. The bottom edge of the background material has 3 rows of red markings. Badly burned (brown) from acidity of cardboard backing on which it was sewn.
