Description:
A feathered plume, dyed turquiose blue, in a blue cardboard case (91.246.2). Feathers sewn onto mounting stick of wood, with a metal holder at the base. A note in black ink script, accompanying the plume reads "Cockade presented/ to Lieut. Tertius Taylor/ Member of Light/ Infantry by/ La Fayette."

Label Text:
During times of peace, the importance of decoration in militia uniforms outstripped any usefulness required by combat. Worn in the militia hat of Lieutenant Tertius Taylor (1783-1851), this plume would have garnered him attention for its vibrant color, height, and quivering motion when he walked.
