Description:
Irish delft circular plate with the "Radial Flower" pattern in blue. The well is decorated with a central blue whorl with foliage, and both the curvature and rim are decorated with dark blue dots with interconnecting lines. Typical Irish features include the "3" painted on the bottom; and the distinctive Dublin glaze known as "sunken blue", which occurs on the majority of blue-painted Dublin wares. However, this sunken blue feature is also found on Liverpool delftware, which often makes attribution difficult. During a visit to the National Museum at Merseyside (Liverpool) storage area in Jan, 2001, Amanda Lange, the ceramics curator, saw a locally-found fragment with the identical rim and curvature design. However, since the area where the fragment was found was not a pottery site, it was not clear whether the piece had been locally produced or imported from Ireland. The New Hampshire Historical Society owns a similar plate [1966.018.13] with a history of ownership in the Chandler and Rollins families of Bedford, NH, given by Rollins descendants, Laura Berry Offutt and Harriet Berry Derham.
