Description:
English delft circular plate with blue decoration. The well is decorated with a chinoiserie landscape scene of a house with a projection from each roof end; a tall poplar and pine, and smaller 'telegraph pole' trees; large rocks and foliage around the house; and a small island-like clump of a rock and foliage in the foreground. The curvature is encircled with a trellis pattern with blue dots and crosses; the outer rim is surrounded by a series of blue dots in blue squares. Fragments with the same border pattern were found by Garner in Lambeth and in excavations at Colonial Williamsburg; and the Victoria and Albert Museum has a similar plate dated 1760.
