Description:
English delft circular plate with blue decoration. The well is decorated with a chinoiserie landscape scene of a house with a projection from each roof end; a tall poplar and pine, and smaller 'telegraph pole' trees; running fence, large rocks and foliage around the house; and a small island-like clump of a rock and foliage in the foreground. The curvature is encircled with a trellis pattern with blue dots and crosses; the outer rim is surrounded by a series of blue dots in blue squares. There is a blob of glaze covering part of the trellis and the top of the tall tree in the well. Fragments with the same border pattern were found by Garner in Lambeth and in excavations at Colonial Williamsburg; and the Victoria and Albert Museum has a similar plate dated 1760.

Subjects:
Pottery; glaze (coating by location)
