Description:
Oil painting on an oak panel printed across the bottom, "South Entrance of Chicopee Village, Springfield," the south entrance of Chicopee village on the Springfield road. The scene depicts a wide road in the center with two couples walking flanked by a white rail fence and tall trees; two large, four-story framed buildings (cotton mills) across the road from a meeting house and hipped-roof house with end chimneys and a porch; and Mount Tom in the background. The scene is taken from an engraving of Chicopee Village that appears in John Warner Barber's "Historical Collections" published in 1839.
